The foundation

Rational Scrum™ delivers an agile-based methodology that’s been successful time and again at our clients. It puts effective, substantive core principles together to ensure efficiency, eliminate risk, and safeguard quality.

At the core of Rational Scrum you’ll find simplicity. Today, there are more complicated methodologies in the world than we know what to do with — from industrially-strong “waterfall” process to seat-of-the-pants all out Extreme Programming. Rational Scrum was borne from the recognition of three things:

  1. Visibility and accountability — such as delivered by Scrum — are good things across any methodology.
  2. Agility and maturity are compatible — there are valuable lessons to be learned from Agile methodologies as well as mature processes such as Waterfall and long-standing Risk and Quality standards.
  3. None of the methodologies alive today are right for every situation — and many are drastically wrong in most situations.

We also felt the pain many of our clients have gone through attempting to adopt “the right” process or methodology. Every situation involved massive upheaval, restructuring of process and policy, adopting new and often poorly explained solutions to problems that the team often didn’t understand in the first place.

Rational Scrum delivers a simple solution. A methodology that’s light on process — but borrows the most important elements from every methodology, such as putting quality assurance front-and-center to all operations. It’s easy to adopt — because it’s flexible and accommodates starting small and growing. One that’s familiar — using easy-to-use Scrum terminology with a light sprinkling of traditional vernacular.

Quality management

A sound quality assurance program focuses on core principles, preventing problems, and finding solutions before they become endemic or “baked in” to your product, organization, or processes.

Your quality assurance program needs to be an integrated part of everyday activities. An integrated quality assurance solution means your team isn’t thinking about how to find problems, they’re finding them automatically. They’re just doing it.

Creating the right process that fits seamlessly into your organization is something Hyrax International LLC has the experience to do. We’ll provide the knowledge on how to do good quality assurance and then transfer that knowledge to your team.

How it works

Delivering excellence

Technical competency, lean operations, risk management, process improvement. It’s simple: We use our experience and expertise to help you help yourselves in the most economically sensitive way possible. There’s only one way that’s going to happen: With your people, not ours. We understand that. We make sure you know how to succeed, then we step out of the picture.

Rational Scrum has its roots in Scrum for process management, as well as traditional methodologies such as Rational Unified Process and Waterfall to make sure important details aren’t overlooked. But the “heavyweight” processes are held in reserve, added in balance with adaptive and agile thinking. It starts small, but provides a strong framework to grow large. It keeps the business moving forward at all times, but watches for important gaps and risks along the way.

The core principles of Rational Scrum pay close attention to areas that often pose problems to small- and mid-size companies. Part of the process is implementing just the right level of process at just the right time to avoid problems. This, combined with Hyrax International LLC’s long experience in multiple industries arms you for success.

All Rational Scrum implementations begin with an on-site assessment of your existing processes. We adapt Rational Scrum to your needs but introduce program areas that address weak or risky processes first. Some of the areas a Rational Scrum program will look into include:

  • Project management procedures and practices
  • Project health monitoring
  • Communication and visibility with teams and the organization
  • Existing program management procedures and practices
  • Software or hardware quality assurance
  • Risk management and mitigation
  • Measurement processes (“metrics”) and how they are used
  • Requirements management, audits and documentation
  • Accountability
  • Independent contractor impact
  • Security and information assurance implications
Rational Scrum is efficient and quickly adaptable to your needs. Our on-site assessment program is focused and typically delivers results in weeks, not months. We leverage our existing body of process guides, coursework and interactive learning tools to transfer knowledge fast, but at your own team’s ideal pace. We give you the tools to monitor project health and forward progress.

It’s simple: We use our experience and expertise to help you help yourselves in the most economically sensitive way possible.

It works — but don’t take our word for it. Look at our track record: We defined United Future’s Enterprise software division and directed Yoostar™, delivering the 2-year multivendor project on time for worldwide launch with Best Buy and Harrods. At Practice Technologies, Rational Scrum delivered a smoothly executing multinational development team, turning out new legal work product tools on schedule every six months and lowered costs by $1.8M per year. At Xerox, Rational Scrum was at the heart of technology innovation that led to Xerox® Sentinel™ and lowered customer care costs by 70% worldwide.
